What is 3D Archery?
3D Archery is a form of target archery, a fun, exciting and affordable sport that the whole family can enjoy together. It gets is name from the 3-dimensional foam targets that the archers shoot at. 3D Archery can be participated by anyone at any skill level. 3D Archery can be set in the woods, fields and sometime even at indoor ranges.
3D Archery is a lot like golf
Archers, like golfers, walk a course, take a shot at each hole or in this case, each target and keep track of their score. In the sport of golf, golfers need to know of far away the hole is to choose the right club. In 3D Archery, archers also have to estimate the distance, which will affect their shot placement, to get the highest score. In golf the lowest score wins, in 3D the highest score wins, as the archer only shoots 1 arrow per target and scores higher points the closer the shooter comes to the mark.
Target Scoring in 3D Archery
Each 3D Target will have a set of scoring rings on it. The scoring is normally club or association dependant. Many archery clubs use the following scoring: the smallest circle scores 12 points, the next ring is the heart, 10 points, the lung is 8 points, the body is 5 points. The hoof or antlers on deer score a zero.
Types of Archery Targets
3D Archery courses generally consist of various life-sized animal shaped foam targets. The types of animals will vary depending on the club. You may see everything from Antelope, Deer, Sheep, Snakes, Beaver, Skunk, Moose, Elk, Cougar, Bobcat and much more. We have some novelty targets for the kids.
Archery Skill Levels Required
3D Archery has many classes for different skill levels and equipment. Even beginners and children can have a lot of fun in this sport. The archery equipment you use, is the deciding factor on how far away your targets will be. An example for Bowhunter Class is 35 yards and under.
Marked 3D vs. Unmarked 3D Archery
There are two types of archery events, Marked Yardage and Unmarked Yardage. The majority of shoots are Unmarked Yardage shoots. In this category, the archer stands at the designated stake and estimates the distance to the target, taking the shot, trying to score the highest possible points.
In Marked 3D Archery, the yardage of each target is marked. Some clubs will even put a small dot on the highest scoring ring. The object is to hit the highest scoring ring. At The Bow Range, we have an advanced unmarked course and and easier, marked course with each target having 50, 40, 30, 20 and 15 yard stakes. The hot shots shoot at 50 yards and the kids shoot at 15. Most people shoot from the 20 and 30 yard markers.
Do we rent archery equipment?
The Bow Range does not currently rent out archery
equipment. In archery, one size does not fit all. Each shooter needs to have their bow and arrows fitted to their individaul body size and strength. Feel free to contact us for our archery shop recommendations and suggestions on what to look for in equipment.
